Halo goodness with homebrew game Halo: Genocide for the PSP

Halo: Genocide - Image 1 Halo: Genocide - Image 2

Homebrew developer Xx FightStar xX has finally released his game for the PlayStation Portable, Halo: Genocide. The dev's latest creation is a 2D version of Halo: Combat Evolved for the PC, and is a side scrolling shooter. According to Xx FightStar xX, this homebrew game is a prequel of sorts to Evolved.

Here's the list of features Halo: Genocide has in store for us:
  • Weapon Pickup, Weapon Selection, Weapon Spawning, 3 Weapons (Pistol, Machine Gun & Sniper Rifle, Individual Weapon Power & Ammo
  • Health Bar, Lives Bar & Ammo Counter - All fully functional
  • 3 Different Types Of Enemies : Guant, Elite & Jackal, Up to 3 enemies on screen at a time, Good AI
  • Menu & Intro - Both fully functional & with selectable options
  • 4 levels
  • Scrolling
  • Interesting Story that updates you prior to the game and after each level
  • Smooth Animation & Weapon Selection
  • Impressive HUD (Heads Up Display) that keeps you updated with things
Xx FightStar xX says that in the game, "The Crosshair has to be on/almost on the enemy to result in a hit. Crouching makes a round shield appear around you and makes you invulnerable to enemy fire." The developer also tells us that there are still some bugs with this release, so feedback on the game and those darn bugs will be very helpful.

Credits and other pertinent details are in the readme file, so better go through that first before playing Halo: Genocide. Enjoy the game!

ISO

All games are either ISO's or CSO's if the ISO/CSO is uploaded in one part rename.ini to .iso or .cso (which ever one it is), or extract .iso/.cso file using winrar if the file is already a .rar file. If the game is in multiple parts download all parts to same folder, then extract using winrar.

LightMP3 v1.1.0

For those who were not able to catch the first release of this homebrew app, here's a bit of a primer. LightMP3 is basically a MP3 player for the PSP that is low on resource and battery usage, allowing you to listen to music on your PSP for longer periods of time. Anyway, here are the changes for the new version:
  • Added support for M3U file
  • Added playlist browser
  • Added playlist editor
  • File browser now filters files, showing only mp3 and m3u.
  • Added shuffle and repeat
  • Added volume boost option
Told you, you were going to like some of the changes. Remember to go over the Readme file before installing the app, though, just so you know what you're getting into. After that, enjoy!

Reports on "unflashable" PSP units surface yet again

We got word that there's a reason why it seems like consumers are having a hard time getting a PlayStation Portable unit nowadays. Reportedly, the supplies were intentionally being pulled out by Sony. Why? They're allegedly trying to equip the recalled PSPs with a stronger "anti-copy protection".
According to various sources including local distributors and a handful of our own readers, the supplies were indeed recalled. The distributors added that Sony will be providing them with new "unflashable" units. Sony, on the other hand, denied these reports.
The following is a statement from another distributor and was quoted from French gaming site PSP-Generation, "We prepare a new console with a system anti-copy on the mother chart and we will deliver the consoles as soon as available".
The mentioned site also added that the same was uttered by other store owners. Take note that it was also made clear that this is not the much-rumored PSP 2. If these reports turn out to be true, the new units are just a revision of the existing ones.

Daedalus R13 may use Bios files

StrmnNrmn sent us an email recently that really got us thinking about how far Daedalus has come from its humble beginnings more than a year ago. Not only does he give us some prime information about the direction of Daedalus, but he also mentions just how long it might take him to actually get everything running properly.

Here's the important information he tipped us off to, which you guys might be interested in knowing. He writes, "R13 might actually use Bios files now. I figured this might take 3 more years to develop to run almost perfect, so I will use Bios files to help me on my Daedalus PSP Project."

Three years folks. That's a lot of dedication from the StrmnNrmn, and we're certainly glad to have him around. To all the folks out there who are fans of his work, you may want to send some love his way because the way of the homebrew developer is long and tiring.

In any case, his email leads us to believe that a formal update on Daedalus R13's status is incoming, so you may want to check out his website periodically. In the meantime, you guys may want to try out Daedalus R12, the current build of his N64 emulation program.

Dark Alex leaving PSP scene??

We have to say that we are still stunned and unconvinced by this development. We're not saying that it isn't true. What we are just saying is that we couldn't believe it ourselves. On the official website of the great homebrew developer Dark AleX, we found this,

Bye, scene.

I've decided to cease OE development, and leave PSP scene. The reasons are various. One of them is the time it consumes, which I'm losing from other things. The other is related to my security. I didn't like Sony menaces to PS3 hackers. I think it is better to leave now rather than end paying the consequences.

The last time we heard, DAX was skipping FW 3.50 and is working on FW 3.51. We looked around the Internet and various sites mentioned that the news was confirmed to them personally by Dark AleX himself. We don't know what really happened with him and Sony but DAX added that he is avoiding future legal issues with the company.

Dark AleX will surely be missed because of his great contributions to the homebrew community. With all the things he did, maybe the least thing we can do is send our messages of good faith to him. From QJ.NET, good luck DAX on whatever future endeavor you wish to pursue. Thank you for the time you spent with the PSP community.

Dark AleX skipping 3.50 OE, working on 3.51 OE instead

French PSP news site PSP-Generation has posted some pretty big news - both good and bad - concerning the PSP homebrew scene.

The bad news is that according to Mathieulh, Dark AleX will not be releasing custom firmware 3.50 OE, so those who have been waiting for it won't ever get it. The good news is that Dark AleX will be rolling out custom firmware 3.51 OE instead to keep abreast of Sony's most current firmware version for the PSP handheld system.

There has been no time frame yet for when 3.51 OE will come out, but rest assured that we'll be reporting it as soon as it does. Keep checking back here for updates. Thanks to bhattsan for the heads-up on this news piece.

Official ISO loader found in FW 3.50, 3.51

More news from the PSP homebrew front. Mathieulh has explained on the Devsgen PSP forums that Sony has included an official ISO loader in PSP firmware versions 3.50 and 3.51. The loader is called np9660.prx and will apparently let PSP users load ISO files off their memory sticks.

The first explanation that comes to mind regarding the official ISO loader is that Sony is planning to release downloadable PSP titles either through PSN or a similar service geared exclusively for the PSP. The company has already mentioned earlier this year that a download service for the PSP is in the works.

French PSP news site PSP-Generation also notes that Dark AleX and Mathieulh will be patching the np9660.prx file for use in custom firmware 3.51 OE.
